There are a ton of new action games coming out for Sony’s PlayStation 4 in 2018. But only a few of them merit a spot on this top 10 list.

These games represent the 10 top most-wanted action games for 2018. Some are flagship titles from storied franchises while others are completely new games.

If you’re serious about your action games, 2018 is going to be a year to remember on PS4.

Here are the top 10 PS4 action games coming in 2018.

10. Darksiders III

Gunfire Games’ upcoming action-adventure game Darksiders III places players in control of Fury, one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, who uses magics as well as whips and other weapons.Darksiders III

Fury’s quest is in a wartorn Earth in which she must eradicate the Seven Deadly Sins. The company has a storied development, originating all the way back with the bankrupt THQ games.

The development team is largely comprised of members of the original two games and these former programmers from Vigil Games give fans some hope that the third installment will preserve the game’s awesome gameplay and atmosphere.

The game will feature an updated graphics engine but will retain the iconic look of the previous two games.

Additionally, the combo-heavy RPG-influenced combat should largely carry over to the third installment as well.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • Bioshock
  • Max Payne
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider

9. Attack on Titan 2

In development from Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, the sequel to the videogame based on the eponymous anime and manga series is much anticipated by both fans of the series and gamers alike.9_Attack on Titan 2_1

The videogame will follow the second season of the show and will offer co-op play upon release. It will feature over 37 characters from both seasons of the anime and will allow more interaction with NPCs and the game’s world.

Players will also have the ability to create their own customized avatars. Town life is the non-combat portion of the game that will serve as the space in which players develop relationships with other characters.

If you’re not familiar with the anime and manga series, then you don’t know how intense the combat and action can be.

Leaping around high into the air and slashing at gigantic creatures has never lost its appeal and this game promises that kind of bareknuckle action in spades.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • Naruto Shippuden
  • Berserk: Band of the Hawk

8. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

Sega’s Yakuza series is an under-reported, sleeper hit year after year. Easily one of the best series that Sega produces regularly, the Yakuza games always present a deep story and amazing graphics.8_Yakuza 6 The Song of Life_2

While the story is the main focus, the gameplay is engaging as well. The games offer a little something different from entry to entry but gamers looking for an epic, cinematic experience need look no further than the Yakuza series.

Now is the time to dive in, head first, and experience the drama and danger of the Japanese underworld. If you played Shenmue and loved it, Yakuza is next level and a must-play for you indeed.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • Shenmue
  • Nier Automata
  • Persona 5

7. Metal Gear Survive

In a huge departure for the series, Metal Gear Survive is an action-adventure, squad-based survival game pitting players against hordes of nano-zombies that want to tear the player’s base apart.

Gone are the three-hour long cinematics and here in their place are zombies and bows and arrows (no kidding).

While many were skeptical upon first viewing, the game has proven to be addictive to those that have had a chance to play it in beta form.

Survival games were hot before arena games so perhaps Metal Gear Survive was born out of that zeitgeist.

Either way, it is easily one of the strangest games coming out in 2018 and it will be interesting to see how this pivot turns out for the series.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • Left Alive
  • Past Cure
  • Resident Evil Revelations

6. Dynasty Warriors 9

Koei Tecmo’s long-running musou series returns with a ninth installment with even more bright, detailed graphics than before and more soldiers on the field than thought possible.

Set in ancient China, most Dynasty Warriors iterations follow heroes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms saga.

They even have their own genre: musou. Musou games are insane affairs, combining the button-mashing gameplay of arcade titles with the more nuanced gameplay you would expect from an RPG.

The games are insanely simple in execution but dangerously addictive. You don’t need to be familiar with other entries in the series to enjoy it and Dynasty Warriors 9 promises to be the most refined and robust experience to date.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • Hyrule Warriors
  • Musou games
  • Samurai Warriors 4

5. Shovel Knight: King of Cards

Shovel Knight is one of the most beloved games to grow up out of the indie scene. A sequel is totally expected but no one knows quite what to expect.5_Shovel Knight King of Cards_2

Well, you can expect more of the same only better and more of it – and that’s a good thing. Shovel Knight’s endearingly retro presentation and addictive gameplay both evoke a not-too-distant past in videogames that is sure to sell the game on nostalgia alone.

But this is no slouch, then or now, and is probably going to be one of the most solid action games to come out this year.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • Shovel Knight
  • Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

4. One Piece: World Seeker

Bandai Namco’s One Piece:World Seeker will be the first One Piece to feature an open-world environment, a seemingly must-have for modern games.4_One Piece World Seeker_2

The player will wage battles in an open-world environment that draws heavily from the anime itself, including music and sound.

The game’s graphics are amazing. It looks like a moving anime and the fluid responses the characters make to their wild fighting moves not only fits in with the aesthetic it makes it purposeful instead of secondary.

Really, the game is quite gorgeous and the action is so weird looking that the game is compelling on those merits alone.

The One Piece name should carry it far, but perhaps it will stand out in a crowd of stellar titles since it is one of the few that embraces such a gorgeously cartoonish style.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • The Black Clover
  • Seven Deadly Sins
  • Adventure Time

3. Monster Hunter World

The Monster Hunter series from Capcom is a phenomenon in Japan but has never really caught on in the West in quite the way its publisher would like.3_Monster Hunter World_1

Monster Hunter World could change all of that. An open-world game with amazing graphics, Monster Hunter World pits players against absolutely colossal creations that take up the entire screen.

People who are into big epic set pieces and enjoy games like Pokemon or Breath of the Wild will find tons to love with this game.

Unlike previous installments, Monster Hunter World also promises a very detailed, very involved narrative to underpin everything, unlike previous games that left the narrative after the initial portions of the game.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • Pokemon series
  • Dragonball Fighter Z
  • Code Vein

2. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption brought open-world gaming to the wild west and rest is history. Rockstar Games rarely disappoints, and few analysts expect them to begin with Red Dead Redemption 2.2_Red Dead Redemption 2_2

Like every other game these days, Red Dead Redemption 2 is open-world and multivaried – everyone will experience the game in a unique way.

This is what makes it so compelling and popular with gamers. Improved graphics are expected, but Rockstar has kept a tight lid on all of the gaming improvements they’re bringing to the table with this game.

We can probably expect a lot of its open-world mechanics have benefitted from what Rockstar has learned with GTA V but we shouldn’t assume that Red Dead Redemption 2 won’t introduce entirely new concepts of its own making.

People who write the series off as GTA with cowboys do not even know the half of what this series offers.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • Far Cry
  • Metro
  • Grand Theft Auto series

1. God of War

The God of War reboot’s trailer stunned many – here was Kratos, but now he’s a Norse god. What gives?1_God of War_2

Billed as a soft reboot for the series, God of War for the PS4 should offer some of the same intense action as previous installments but might also focus on a softer narrative, one less blood-drenched and psychopathic and, instead, more down to earth and soft.

Afterall, Kratos has a son, so let’s hope this game doesn’t turn into the avenge my son who dies a horrible death saga.

But maybe it could – you never know. Either way, whether you care about narrative or not, God of War’s action is some of the best around.

Few games bring that kind of quarter-eating arcade experience home anymore, but God of War resurrected that difficult style of gameplay and, best of all, was a console game.

Back in the day challenge, coupled with solid gameplay, was one of the few tricks developers had up their sleeves to raise the replay value of a game.

Let’s hope God of War continues this challenge of giving you more than your money’s worth in gameplay.

You’re probably going to like this game if you also like:

  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • Days Gone
  • The Witcher 3
